The 'Secret' to a Healthy Life... Movement

Is this your pain? One minute lesson

 

In one minute, here is a simple exercise to demonstrate pain without 'injury' or 'damage'. Pain that will never show up on a scan.

 

Step 1. Tense your fist hard with your right hand. Left hand stays relaxed.

 

Step 2. Now raise your arms anywhere you like and start to rotate your wrists continually in a circle for 30-60 seconds.

 

Step 3. Notice the pain.

 

The pain for this condition will never show up on a scan. This pain is very much real. But there is no 'injury' or 'damage'. 

 

"Brace your core", "don't lift weights", "rest if it hurts", "you can't ever run again", "avoid bending", "sit tall", "you need strong drugs"... Non-evidence based advice has created a major problem for a lot of people.

 

This is the pain that happens when we 'protect' and 'tense' our once painful body part. A bad habit (conscious or unconsciously) of protecting can easily create a new pain for us. While we have recovered, our body and mind may not have realised.

 

Then by stopping movements, we can also atrophy and create even more issues. A weak body that doesn't move will always be in pain if subjected to exercises all of a sudden. The body is anti-fragile though. The more you move, train and understand your body - the more you can achieve. Including managing your pain.

What to Ask Your Medical Professional

 

Before you undergo any treatment. It is important to be informed. A medical professional is in a position of authority. So it may feel strange to ask but it is critical if you want to follow evidence based health care.

Your First Visit

 

Your first visit may last up to an hour.

 

Please arrive at least ten minutes before your appointment.

 

On arriving you will need to fill in your medical forms and other details. Please ensure you disclose all prior medical procedures and surgeries you have had. These may affect the method of treatment.

 

When you meet with the chiropractor, they will:

talk through your medical history,

perform a physical exam, and

may conduct orthopaedic and functional testing

 

This will help to identify any problems and find an appropriate treatment.
 

After the consult, please ask the chiropractor questions and discuss the treatment recommendations.
 

Recommendations are evidence-based, and often include:

treatment types given

safety considerations

recommended treatments schedules, and/or

connecting you to other health professionals such as a GP, or a referral for X-ray or MRI.

 

Treatment provided during the first appointment, so long as it is appropriate. Treatments may include spinal manipulation, advice or rehabilitation. Our recommendations vary and we do take into consideration your preferences.

 

X-rays may be required for this session and can be taken on site for a fee.

 

Future visits

 

Your treatment schedule will be goal dependent and based upon your treatment response. Most people have significant improvements to treatments within a few sessions.

 

Your schedule may adjust, depending on your response to treatment. Re-examinations may be necessary to assess your response to particular treatments. Your schedule will best match your goal. Whether that is to improve a recent condition or to manage, a long term condition.

 

Your chiropractor may consult or refer you to other trusted healthcare providers. This may be for testing or a second opinion.
